How I became a Top-Rated PLUS freelancer on Upwork, and how you can too.

No insider hacks. No shortcuts. Just the real blueprint to going Top-Rated PLUS.

When I first started on Upwork nine years ago, I thought getting clients would be easy. I had the skills, the portfolio, and the drive. But after sending what felt like a million proposals with zero responses, I realized I was doing it all wrong.
Fast forward to today: I’ve been a Top-Rated PLUS freelancer for 5 years now, landing premium clients and making 4 to 5 figures a month (depending on project terms). But here’s the best part! I don’t even send proposals anymore.
Businesses come to me through direct messages, offering contracts, all from my laptop, wherever in the world I happen to be.
So, what changed? Here’s exactly how I cracked the Upwork code.
When I was still sending proposals, I thought clients only cared about price, so I set my rates lower than I should have. Big mistake.
The truth? Clients don’t pay for cheap. They pay for confidence.
Instead of underpricing, I shifted my proposals to focus on:
1. The specific results I could bring them
2. Past wins & experiences that proved my value
3. Why I was the best choice, not the cheapest
The moment I made this shift, I stopped attracting bargain hunters and started landing premium clients.
Most freelancers send generic, boring proposals like:
“Hi, I’m interested in this job. I have 5 years of experience. Hire me!”
That’s the fastest way to get ignored.
Instead, I started writing personalized, punchy proposals that:
Addressed the client’s pain points upfront
Showed I actually read their job post
Had a clear, confident CTA (like “Let’s jump on a quick call!”)
Opening Hook — Grab their attention!
“I see you need help with social media management. I’ve done this for clients in [relevant industry] and would love to help!”
Why I’m the Best Choice — No fluff, just proof.
“I recently helped a construction company boost their social media engagement by 2%. A key indicator that their target audience was connecting with their content. I implemented the 50–30–20 strategy:
50% engaging content (polls, industry insights, and interactive posts)
30% curated content (relevant articles & trends to position them as industry leaders)
20% promotional content (strategic offers without overwhelming the audience)
Staying consistent, we saw steady engagement growth, stronger audience retention, and more inbound inquiries for their services.”
Call to Action — Make it easy to say YES.
“Let’s discuss how I can help, can we schedule a quick 15-minute chat?”
Once I nailed my proposals, my response rate skyrocketed.

Your Upwork profile is your sales page. If it looks like a resume, you’re losing clients.
Here’s what I optimized to stand out: (but you can always edit or change your bio depending on what's needed)
My New Profile Introduction:
“Hello! I’m Jen, your go-to expert for all things digital marketing and social media management.
With over 9 years of experience, I’ve helped businesses boost their online presence and streamline marketing efforts. By blending strategy with creativity, I deliver results that exceed expectations. Don’t just take my word for it, check out my clients’ feedback.”
I focused on:
1. The client’s needs, not just my experience.
2. Client testimonials & feedback to build trust. Not every client will leave a 5-star review, and that’s completely normal. Don’t be alarmed if potential clients see a few ratings below five stars, what truly matters is maintaining at least 80% 5-star reviews and ensuring your feedback reflects professionalism, reliability, and results. Additionally, your Job Success Score (JSS) plays a crucial role in attracting premium clients.
Pro Tip: To stay competitive, aim for a JSS between 97% to 100% by consistently delivering high-quality work, maintaining strong client relationships, and closing contracts smoothly.
3. Positioning myself as an expert, not just another freelancer.
Key Takeaway: Your profile should scream, “I solve problems." Not just list your skills.
Most freelancers don’t use Upwork’s built-in features to boost visibility, but they should.
Growth Hacks That Got Me More Clients:
1. Kept my availability updated. Upwork’s algorithm prioritizes active freelancers.
2. Invested in low-budget Upwork ads. I boosted my profile and showed my “Availability Badge” to attract premium clients.
3. Asked clients for reviews. Higher ratings = More invites & direct messages.
4. Joined Upwork’s Talent Clouds. Exclusive access to premium, high-paying jobs.
5. Used Upwork’s Profile Certifications & Previous Clients. This builds instant credibility.
My profile ranked higher, I got more invites, and premium clients started reaching out first.
At first, I said yes to everything. BIG mistake.
Some clients were:
1. Micromanagers
2. Late on payments (especially with fixed-price projects, I focused on hourly rates instead!)
3. Expecting premium work for cheap rates
Once I set boundaries and only took projects that matched my value, my freelance business exploded.
You Can Do This Too!
I didn’t have:
Insider connections
A huge portfolio
Some secret hack
I just figured out what works on Upwork, and doubled down on it.
1. Stop competing on price, sell value instead
2. Write killer proposals that actually get replies
3. Optimize your profile like a sales page
4. Use Upwork’s growth tools to your advantage
5. Work with the right clients, not just any clients
Your turn! What’s your biggest struggle on Upwork?
